Summary/Abstract: Copyright, as a system that protects the intellectual property as well as the rights of the authors, represents monumental civilizational, cultural and legal acquis in the 20th century, both in our country and abroad. One cannot be certain about the exact date when the copyright system was created. Modern library science is facing on a daily basis with the question of copyright and its means for protection. Conflicting points that exists in the area of copyright law on one side and the freedom of speech and free access to the information on the other, remain focal points in contemporary library science. In order for librarians to carry out their jobs in a professional and law abiding manner when it comes to the copyright laws, it is of vital importance for them to get themselves acquainted with the matter. Copyright grants legal protection to the author, guaranteeing him an exclusive and inviolable right to control the publishing and later use of his work. Copyright permit for using the work of the author, commonly known as licenses, can be obtained solely by the bearer of the copyright. Modern technology and the internet have brought with them whole set of advantages derived from the web surfing and the vast number of internet content, but at the same time, they have opened the door for the misuse of the authorship. Today, a mouse click away, one can download copyright content from the internet, make an act of plagiarism and continue to show the “new” work as his own, original content. The term itself deriver form the word plagiaris, commonly known as „literary theft“ was used even in the Roman times. Martial, famous Roman poet, was the first person to accuse his colleague for steeling of his verses. Today we encounter this problem at a daily basis. Aristotle, Sophocles, Vergilius, Shakespeare, Eco, Brecht, Crnjanski, Kis are just some of many famous names to be accused of this crime. The problem of plagiarism is becoming more and more present even in the academia community, where we can find “borrowed” motifs, ideas, and even whole passages and entire doctoral thesis With the help of specialized software tools, it is possible to detect plagiarism and the violation of the copyright by simple comparison of the text block with all the texts that are currently available online.
