About the Names of Polish Progressive Rock Artists. Part III: 2004–2013

Summary/Abstract: This article is the third in the series of texts devoted to the names of Polish progressive-rock bands and solo artists. The Internet – a tool, which is treated as something obvious nowadays – significantly influenced the activity of many artists and methods of music distribution. Its diversified impact on creation of rock bands’ names slowly begins to be seen, too (unusual spelling, language games with capital letters within words). The names of bands, which have appeared in the last 10 years, are mainly English. It is connected with the widening of the group of listeners, which is no longer limited to the Polish audience. Solo artists seldom sign their albums with their real names and surnames. They tend to use pseudonyms. Names are rarely created at random, a vast majority of them being a result of a well-thought-over artistic strategy. They usually relate to the music tradition (especially the progressive-rock tradition), refer to the art-rock character of their artistic activity, lineup or the band’s history, and point to the broad, non-musical interests of the artists.
