Summary/Abstract: Modern organizations function in a fast changing world which deepens the complexity and uncertainty of their functioning on every organizational level. The pace of changes ongoing simultaneously in numerous areas and the necessity of adjusting to them are both a significant challenge for the people in the company. As soon as they manage to adjust to one change, another one appears with its uncertainty, which enlarges the complexity of the environment. Therefore, it is a challenge for the leaders to act in dramatically changing conditions; it also requires critical assessment of the existing paradigms of leadership both in theory and practice. The aim of the article is a characteristics of strategic leadership in the context of the challenges encountered by modern companies. An attempt of an identification of the strategic leader was made as a compilation of two perspectives − visionary leadership and managerial (operational) leadership.
