Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore the role and function of the translator in the process of translation from the perspective of media philosophy According to the "messenger-model" proposed by Sybille Kramer as a useful tool to analyse the term "medium" as well as the essence of mediality, the paper presents an attempt to describe the activity of the translator as an intermediary between languages, cultures and texts - the activity which is taken for granted und consequently often neglected in various models of the translation process. Based on categories of distance, heteronomy, thirdness, materiality as well as indifference, which are constitutive of the term "medium", the present paper will characterize the translator as a medium.
