The evolution of translation standards as illustrated by the history of Polish translations of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Summary/Abstract: Translation standards, techniques and trends change with time, as they do in any discipline. Books considered as “classics” become subject to numerous re-translations, which, when viewed from a historical perspective, illustrate how the standards of translation practice have evolved. The present article examines three Polish translations of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: the earliest one, by Emilia Dobrzańska (1880-1881), the classic one, by Teresa Świderska (1930) and the most recent one, by Gabriela Jaworska (2007). It looks at the strategies employed by the three translators, taking into consideration the historical contexts in which they appeared, their purpose, and the changes in translation theory over time.
