Smart specialisation as a way to sustainable development

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of paper is to present the concept of smart specialization, particularly emphasized in the new financing term of EU cohesion policy for the period 2014-2020 through the prism of its importance from the point of view of sustainable development. The paper presents the definition and essence of the concept of smart specialization and using the method of desk research analyzes the documents of a strategic nature, having a direct or indirect relationship with the concept and shows its correlation with sustainable development. The paper points out the need to involve the regions in creating an innovation strategy focused on intelligent and sustainable development. Another aspect of the research is to study the case of Regional Innovation Strategy of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship for smart specialization for 2014-2020 (RIS 3).
