Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development of the university means a coherent, integrated, omni-directional, based on a quality way of managing resources. It reduces agents blocking development, and stimulates those fostering it. This allows the university to dynamically increase research, education and advisory potential. It may contribute to the quality of life of the academic community, and society. The aim of this paper is to identify the factors blocking and supporting the sustainable development of universities. The paper presents a model of their impact on learning outcomes in a situation of permanent reform of higher education in Poland. The paper has shown that the pace and direction of sustainable development are the effect of synergy of way the universities function, including quality of management, appropriately selected resources and relationships with the environment. They are used to accomplish the mission, goals and tasks of the university. Sustainable development of universities is possible under two conditions. Firstly, the widespread awareness of the academic community at the joint responsibility of higher education institutions in relations with stakeholders is needed. It should combine social, ethical, economic and ecological responsibility. Secondly, the acceptance of continuous self-improvement of teachers, other staff and students. Then the results achieved by universities will satisfy their employees, students and alumni, as well as promote the development of the university and all its stakeholders.
