Summary/Abstract: The article undertakes the question of transformation of museums from the perspective of a growing conflict between pedagogic and performative democracy. The author claims that in spite of widespread opinions, the public is not keen on radical changes in exhibitions and supports the existence of institution in its former shape. Museums are supposed to encourage self-education, self-fulfillment and self-consciousness, and they should play a reformative and moralizing role, while being rational and representing the system of values needed for society. Museum curators also do not seem to be interested in changes which would limit their authority and the ideas of radical changes in the curatorial strategies seem to be a sheer rhetoric. This does not mean a rejection of modern techniques of representation, but rather shows that not always are they accompanied by transformations in museums’ identities.
