Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to outline advantages of morphological criterion proposed by professor Karol Dejna, in the article Terenowe nazwy śląskie written in 1956, used to classify microtoponyms. Microtoponyms are the names of small objects, whose range of functioning is limited to local communication communities in the micro scale. They represent a category of geographic nomenclature, whose main material is the appellation vocabulary. Each of the toponymic material requires adjustment of the criteria in classifying to the gathered nomenclature. In order to make a detailed analysis of a specific name, it is necessary to apply the formal division, as well as the semantic division, and make one of them superior in relation with the second one. Professor Karol Dejna based his classification only on the historical-grammatical criterion, which gave the ability to conform the meaning division to the specific research material. He differentiated two basic groups: the nominal local nomenclature and the no nominal local nomenclature, within which he distinguished five main subgroups.
