Summary/Abstract: The first polish geographical dictionary is Hilarion Karpin´ ski’s {Lexykon geograficzny}, which was published in Vilnius in 1766. This compendium was based on the Vosgien’s (= Jean Baptiste Ladvocat) dictionary. One hundred and eighty years elapsed between the publishing of Karpin´ ski’s work and the first geographical dictionary Ortelius’ {Synonymia geographica} (1578). {Lexykon geograficzny} comprises 684 pages and 6114 entries in part I, and 4951 in part II. The entry is the modern name of geographical entity, after that the Latin geographical name appears. Such method of onomatology presentation earlier was implemented in bi- and multilingual dictionaries.
