The Contribution of Mieczysław Szymczak to the Study of the Polish Dialectal Word-formation

Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the contribution of Mieczysław Szymczak to the study of Polish dialectal word-formation. Mieczysław Szymczak is the author of the book {Gwara Domaniewka i wsi okolicznych w powiecie łęczyckim} (1961) {(The Dialect of Domaniewek and the Neighbouring Villages in the District of Łęczyca)}. This work contains a comprehensive chapter (96 pages) that deals with the word-formation of the dialect of the village of Domaniewek. Szymczak is also the author of the immense dictionary (1226 pages) called {Słownik gwary Domaniewka w powiecie łęczyckim (1962-1973) (The Dictionary of the Dialect of Domaniewek in the District of Łęczyca)}. These works are the most comprehensive descriptions of the dialect of one village in Polish dialectology. The data concerning the word-formation of this dialect and their interpretation is extremely accurate and well documented. It is particularly valuable because the author was an autochthon (he was born in Domaniewek) as well an eminent linguist. In his another book {Nazwy stopni pokrewieństwa i powinowactwa rodzinnego w historii i dialektach języka polskiego} (1966) {(The Names of the Degrees of Relationship in the History of the Polish Language and in Polish Dialects)} Szymczak gives a lot of information concerning the word-formation of the presented terms. Szymczak published also many articles about various affixes and derived forms.
