Summary/Abstract: It is shown that, contrary to the rationalist tradition which is prevalent in philosophical ethics and to the traditional views of moral psychology, research results in the field of neuroethics suggest that the basis for moral sensitivity is constituted by certain emotions such as: blame, mercy and compassion which are classified as a special class of moral emotions. In fact, they are mainly neurophysiological processes that are launched automatically. The existence of such emotions is proved by the results of brain imagining neuropsychological experiments performed on healthy subjects as well as on lesion patients.
