Summary/Abstract: In this article, we consider the problem of transformation of social memory in the global world. Based on the historical experiences of Russia and China, we conceptualize and analyze the confrontational and competitive strategies of using images of the past in the process of building international relations as well as in educational and memorial practices. The confrontational strategy consists in the perception of the foreign policy environment as a number of enemies periodically becoming more active, which allows for the identification of the images of the past that confirm such interpretation. The competitive strategy concentrates on milder forms of interaction, and the search for compromises in describing historical events aimed at using the reached consensus in actual foreign-policy contexts.
