Summary/Abstract: The instructional process for foreign languages is not similar to the one applied to other subjects taught in an educational institution, irrespective of the type of lesson that is used to teach that language. Although self-assessment processes are present when teaching other subjects as well, they occupy a vital part of the language lessons, especially when they focus on the communicational outcome. In the case of such classes, the self-assessment process must be the one to offer the learner the proper feedback on the communication. A minimal experiment conducted during the academic year 2007-2008 on a group of 27 first year students enlisted with the Technical University of Cluj Napoca shows that the European Language Passport could become a very valuable instrument for the self-assessment of language abilities if assisted by supplementary explanations and examples from their future area of professional expertise.
