Summary/Abstract: In the article the Author reflects on translating the reality of Polish cooking, apparently impossible to render into Spanish because of the lack of cultural references and linguistic equivalents. To translate a Polish cooking recipe in the way that one could prepare the authentic Polish bigos means that the translator has to proceed like an anthropologist who, lacking linguistic equivalents in the target language, tries to describe the missing senses and even goes into details of the production process of the ingredients unknown in the target culture. These reflections lead to the conclusion that without perfect knowledge of both cultures it is impossible to provide a reliable translation of a cooking recipe. It is not enough to be fluent in both languages because the translator’s role does not consist in translating words but in intercultural mediation. Translating a recipe for a meal encourages to ponder on the role and attitude of translator who stands astride between two cultures, responsible for the image of one of them in the other.
