Summary/Abstract: The decision on setting up a special economic zone in Shannon in Ireland was made in 1947. However, production and processing operations started in 1985. By 1970 most of zones had been established in developed states, among others in Western Europe. There were established approx. 80 zones in 25 states. Presently, it is estimated that there are approx. 3.000 special economic zones in the world, in 130 states. They are most popular in Asia and Latin America. Africa and Middle-East European areas have become more and more popular and territories of South Africa are the least interesting. The goal of this paper is the examination of existing special economic zones in the European Union states as well as the assessment of perspectives of their further existence and development.
