Summary/Abstract: The introduction and the subsequent popularity of cell phones and text messages have definitely changed communication as we knew it. This paper focuses on the newly acquired social and linguistic dimensions of communication through SMS. First, it analyses the reasons for and the way in which SMS has increased our interaction potential. The second part of the paper presents the new linguistic SMS patterns in the Romanian language which have emerged as a consequence.
