Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses stereotypes in the studies of Ghazali’s work to date, both in the West and in the Muslim East. The author first presents the three most dominant stereotypes related to the understanding of the relationship between Sunnism and Sufism, followed by Ghazali’s critical opposition to philosophical thinking and his role in systematizing esharism, the scholastic philosophy in Islam, and then presents his critical comments, referring to relevant sources. The conclusion emphasizes that it is necessary to point towards a new and more objective approach to Ghazali and his role in Muslim intellectual history that would exceed mere recounting of analyses of his works, i.e. that it is necessary to raise the issue of redefining the fideistic and conservative concepts of “Islamic orthodoxy” on one hand, and the concept of “Medieval Islamic enlightenment” on the other.
