Summary/Abstract: On the basis of collected field materials in the small town of Bensh in Belgium the author outlines the semantic sphere of the concepts Folklore, Tradition, Evolution, i.e. the meanings by means of which they function among the interviewed people. The interviews used in the research are of free type and are undersigned. Without being instigated the interviewed people themselves find the necessity to use these concepts enduing various semantic values to them. The analysis of the material shows that the three concepts are actively functioning in Bensh. On the other hand – their usage gives way to cover common (or uniform) semantic spheres. Last but not least – with some of their semantic values all the three concepts participate in the self-identification of the people in Bensh, in а process of а deliberate search of identity. In parallel there can be observed the tendency to formalize the culture, in the particular case the public authority legitimizes by means of codification.
