Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to an independent problem in Russian historiography – Russians in the system of interethnic relations in contemporary Russia over the 20-year period of its existence. The disintegration of the USSR doubtless led to profound social changes in the life of the country in the early 1990s, ones that also had a considerable impact on interethnic processes in Russia – a country developing on the basis of Russian statehood traditions, on the principles of federalism and civic society, but one that has also preserved the existing variety of nationalities, languages, customs and beliefs. The author follows the main trends in the development of the Russian community and lists the difficulties it encounters in Russia’s new format. He also gives arguments in support of the need of radical changes in respect to the Russian people on the part of the state, of resuming the disrupted dialogue between the cultures of the various peoples, of generating a culture of interethnic communication, of development and maintenance of the traditional trends of Russian culture, of forming a legal basis for the development of the ethnic community, establishing an Institute focused on the problems of the Russian people and undertaking measures to improve the situation of Russians in the Russian Federation.
