Poetic Motifs and Topoi in Gundulić's Tears of a Prodigal Son

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Gundulić's poem Suze sina razmetnoga (The Tears of the Prodigal Son) with respect to the presence of traditional and conventional poetic motifs, images and rhetorical devices that have been recognized as the common heritage of European literature. The multitude and the diversity of the found items support the conclusion that the poem is one of the integral parts of that heritage and tradition. Besides, the analysis of certain items in the poem implies that Gundulić does not simply replicate traditionally established motifs, metaphors or forms, but creatively transforms them in accordance with the needs of different aspects of the poem itself.
