Summary/Abstract: Voluntary service is a social phenomenon that has been developing rapidly in the recent years. Young people are an especially important age group here. It is among them that the movement finds most followers. This stage in a man’s development is particularly interesting for pedagogues, especially because of the ever growing significance of social (peer) groups for a young man. The article looks for coinciding points in a more or less organized and structuralized social movement on the one hand, and pedagogical research on the other. The studies start from two sources – an analysis of selected pedagogical theories showing a man’s personal development in a social context, and an analysis of pedagogical practice and pedagogical empirical research into voluntary service. This means that these are two, in a sense independent, ways, the former of which may be described as a deductive one, and the latter – as an inductive one.
