Summary/Abstract: For the Qur’an to be the primary guide for Muslims, it needs to be understood in all times and spaces. The Qur’an can best guide humanity as long as its messages are received perfectly, and this reception requires adequate comprehension of God’s intention in the divine text. This is why the true interpretation of the Qur’anic verses has always been one of the primary purposes of Muslim scholars. This true interpretation entails true understanding of the Qur’anic concepts. This paper is intended to contribute to this goal by analyzing the term of ayah, one of the most important concepts of the Qur’an. In order to determine the field of meaning of the term, I deal with its etymology, its usage in the pre-Islamic Arab poetry, its lexical content, and its usage in the Qur’an and hadiths. I also deal with the terms that are semantically related to ayah. The main thesis of the article is that the Qur’anic term of ayah has a very rich field of meaning as it signifies more than ten realities.
