Summary/Abstract: The article considers traditional features in Bulgarian agriculture as shown in books of European travellers. She emphasizes the fact that, along with the valuable information about the period under review, concerning which we have very few sources of our own, these travel books contain a high appraisal of the condition of Bulgarian agriculture before Bulgaria fell under Ottoman bondage, and the agricultural tradition of the Bulgarians. She observes that the travellers show the unfavourable situation into which Bulgarian agriculture had fallen, and indicate that Ottoman feudalism was a hindrance to its further development. The data contained in travel books are considered according to branches and farm work, attention being paid to the special farming implements characteristic of Bulgarian agriculture. The author emphasizes that travel books contain valuable source material, which makes it possible to give a general outline of the state of Bulgarian agriculture in a period when no ethnographic research was done.
