Summary/Abstract: The basic ways of preserving sheaves in the fields, widespread in the Bulgarian ethnic territory, are studied in this article. It is emphasized that the basic purpose of this farming custom is practical, but that important folk knowledge which is part of the people's farming tradition is apparent in it. The traditional forms of stacking the sheaves are studied in detail, their geographical distribution being outlined. The differences and the elements they have in common are stressed. There are several forms of preservation used by Bulgarians in stacking the sheaves; they differ from each other in the way the sheaves are arranged, their place in the respective form, their number and also in the name given to the figure. The author says in conclusion that preserving the sheaves in the fields is generally used in Bulgaria. The variant forms in which this is done are conditioned by the specific geographical features in the different regions and provinces. The most favoured and widespread figure in the Bulgarian ethnic territory is a figure known by the name of krastec.
