Summary/Abstract: The task of the creator of the programme for the XVI Shakespeare Festival in Gdańsk (27 VII – 5 VIII 2012) entailed striking a compromise between diversity and standard of performance. Festival favourites included: Luke Perceval’s Hamlet and Silvu Purcărete’s The Tempest, as well as the festival’s dark horse, Konstantin Bogomolov’s Lear. A Comedy. The Russian director not only demystified the national myth of The Great Patriotic War, but also profaned the myth of the theatre-as-temple, which sparked off a great deal of opposition from Russian audiences. In Poland, the performance also triggered a great deal of debate.
