Summary/Abstract: Ever since modern science and technology entered the Islamic world some two centuries ago, bringing with it numerous and serious challenges to the Muslim lifestyle and thought, leading Islamic thinkers have been debating the most appropriate response to these inventions, primarily Western. The debate ahs engendered several clear standpoints, including that of Seyyed Hossein Nasr, certainly at the very top of intellectual sharpness and traditional theoretical Islamic foundation. In his lectures, texts and books, Nasr demonstrates his rich knowledge of history, philosophy and science of the modern world, as well as his true Islamic learning, underscoring the Muslims’ need to study modern sciences on the basis of Islamic principles. His viewpoint may be summarised in three key premises: i) the ambition of modern science to be the only interpreter of the natural order of things cannot be maintained outside the framework of certain presuppositions on the nature of those who understand and that which is understood; ii) blind imitation of Western science and technology threatens Islamic civilisation with internal dissolution; iii) science and technology of modernity are neither neutral nor devoid of value – on the contrary, a particular view of the world and the system of values are their integral part. Positions presented in this interview with Muzaffar Iqbal, president of the Canadian Islamic Studies Centre, reaffirms the above standpoints related to environmental crisis.
