Summary/Abstract: A Romanian poet, playwright, writer, essayist and translator, Marin Sorescu was already known during his lifetime on almost all the continents. He is one of the most valuable playwrights that our literature has ever produced. All his dramatic works may be considered outstanding – Jonah, The Sexton, The Third Stake, A Cold, and so on. What is less known, however, is Sorescu's only play written specially for animation theatre, entitled Prince Charmless, which was never published and, therefore, was staged on very few occasions. Staging one of Sorescu's texts is a true challenge which demands the team's imagination, an unrestrained setting and the passionate performance of the actors. A thorough analysis of the text shows us that the structure of the play resembles a dramatized tale, where certain original aspects are associated to contemporary motifs. The playwright paints a world which is somewhat upside down but which, at the same time, is filled with meaning. The story takes place in the puppet storehouse where the puppets tell stories in their spare time and it is here that Prince Charmless tells his life story. We are dealing here with the remarkable device of the play within a play. There are several comic sources, such as language, irony, satire, quid pro quo, as well as some instances of burlesque and grotesque.
