FROM THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONNAIRE OF ODOBESCU TO THE LIST OF HISTORICAL MONUMENTS 2010 - Teleorman County

Summary/Abstract: School teachers from Teleorman county responsed to Alexandru Odobescu`s popular archaeological questionnaire that was distributed by the Ministry of Cults and Public Instruction to all towns and villages in 1871 and again in 1873. The six questions were designed to allow an inventory of all the ancient settlements and sites in the county to be created. Additional details were sought regarding the geographical position of archaeological sites in relation to extant villages, their extent or size, as well as their shape, their traditional history and a count of all the artefacts found on the surface. There were 88 responses, representing nearly 50% of the urban and rural communes that were located within the administrative limits of Teleorman County at that time. Confirmation of the accuracy and historical value of some of the respondent’s observations have been proven in time, the best example is the List of the Historical Monuments from 2010. Of the 83 archaeological sites in the official list from 2010, 22 of them had been mentioned in answers to the 1870s questionnaire. Amongst the few medieval monuments included in the 2010 list, all being classified as of Group A national significance, there are 5 that are mentioned in the reports of the school teachers from the second half of the 19th century.
