Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the tensions between observable integrative practices and the philosophies of integration. Philosophical concepts of the ‘integration’ have their internal ambiguities and inconsistencies. It is not always clear wheatear the subjects of integrative attempts (the Roma) are the individuals or the community as a whole. Moreover the imagined passivity of the subjects who need to be “integrated” and “mobilized” can stand in sharp contrast with the active “integrative practices” observable among some Roma groups. Through a media case study about the emergence of a Roma leader the author seeks to address the questions: How Roma actively behave in order to be seen as better integrated? And if they do so how their attempts are perceived by the majority?
