Summary/Abstract: 0. While polyglotism is stressed as a fundamental feature of the internal mechanism of culture, it should be constantly kept in mind that at the basis of any model of culture lies a binary opposition of two radically different languages, being in a state of mutual untranslatability. Communication between them takes place with the aid of a metacultural mechanism that establishes a relative equivalence of texts in the two languages.
