Summary/Abstract: The focus is on the different types of detective novel that were published in Bulgaria during the period of communism (1944-89). Among those discussed are the spy novel of the 50s, built on Soviet models, the stock-investigator whodunits of the 60s, the psychological crime dramas of the 70s. A central issue is the evolution of plot and character in these novels during the period.
