Summary/Abstract: Maternity today is one of the most universal and highly rated social values. During the centuries it has been treated as an experience limited only to heterosexual women. Now we observe relatively fast socio-cultural changes that make this area of experience open also for women declaring to be lesbians. This article describes causes and consequences of the phenomenon called in the Western world as “lesbian baby boom” – a quick growth of families formed by homosexual women raising children together. The author focuses on socio-cultural relationship between homosexuality and parenthood and then presents lesbians’ motivations and ways to maternity, role of social support in functioning of non-heteronormative families, and specifics of such families’ structure with regard of a non-biological mother function.
