Summary/Abstract: The aim of the author of the present study is first to present all known material – published as well as unpublished hitherto – relating to the depictions of hands in Bulgarian plastic folklore and then to sum up the technical, historico-functional and cultural and typological aspects of this type of depictions. It is concluded that in Bulgarian plastic folklore they have a denotative and applied function or a symbolic and decorative nature. Emphasis is laid upon their universality and durability as signs of protective power, creative strength, potential energy, conquered chaos, forming cosmos, a universal harmony and balance in nature and society.
