Summary/Abstract: The paper delves deep into how the director communicates his idea of love and how he cinematographically expresses various forms of the same emotion. An analysis of the films “Jules and Jim” (France, 1962) and “The Woman Next Door” (La Femme D'A Cote, France, 1981) underlies this study. The study seeks to explore how the plotline is constructed and how it changes around the relations and the emotions of the protagonists; the relationship between the inner emotions and their external manifestations, on which the narrative is built; the significance of what has been withheld. The selected film material offers examples of how the personality of the character becomes the engine behind the action, changing the course of the events, solving the ending of the story. Presumably, this study would contribute towards a wider and a richer view of the French New Wave and of Francois Truffaut’s work in particular.
