Summary/Abstract: Gertrude Stein's "Autobiography", although not the best piece of writing that Stein produced, ensured her success with the public and stimulated interest in her experimental work. Allegedly the autobiography of her partner, it begs interesting questions about American identity, the relationship between literature and painting, gender and style. Is autobiography just the surface of things? Can we read the palimpsest?
