Summary/Abstract: Nikos Kazantzakis has remained in the public consciousness especially through his novels, some of which have been adapted into successful movies. However, he was equally prolific as a travel writer. This article is an investigation into one of his travelogues, compiled from articles that he wrote for the daily Greek newspaper Akropolis and published as Taxidevontas II: Iaponia Kina (1938), first translated into English in 1963. My analysis focuses on the specific features of the narrative that the author(s) creates (create), on the writing personae, on Kazantzakis’ multi-sensorial engagement with the landscape and on his reading of the Eastern-Western encounter occasioned by his travel experience.
