Summary/Abstract: During the last ten years, radical changes have been carried out in Bulgaria. The social dimensions of the reform have influenced all aspects of social relations. Most of the changes have pointed to the transition from the centralised to the market economy, the establishment of democratic institutions, the safeguarding of human rights and the expansion of contacts with the European Union and with wider European structures. Some changes have pointed to the implementation of a contemporary system of social rights. The Bulgarian government signed the European Social Charter in October 1998 and it was ratified by the National Assembly in March 2000. At the same time, since March 2000, negotiations for accession to the European Union have been underway. The Bulgarian National Assembly has ratified a large number of ILO conventions related to fundamental rights in the workplace as well as other social rights.
