Summary/Abstract: The article interprets M.-K. Puschеl's text "The Body and Surgery During the Middle Ages". The actual question regarding the body calls for the conception of the body in its capacity of an objective and a product of culture rather than an instrument (a model, a bodily code) or structuring the cultural space. The empa¬thy of the text under consideration is in the successful creation of a set of instru¬ments whereby access can be gained to the body as a cultural construct. M.-K. Puschеl's composition requires that the question be raised how culture constitutes the human body and herein is its great contribution.
