Summary/Abstract: Bulgarian communities in North America began to appear in the middle of the 20th century's first decade, although Bulgarians had started to emigrate as early as the seventies of the 19th century and after the signing of the Berlin Treaty on July 1st, 1878. The number of Bulgarian emigres increased after the Ilinden Uprising in 1903, at the end of the Balkan Wars and after the First World War. The reasons behind this emigration vary. Up to 1944 the Bulgarian governments tried by various laws and decrees to regulate the emigration flow to North America, although these attempts did not prove entirely successful. Emigration from Bulgaria was actually banned after 1944. Nevertheless, the totalitarian socialist regime, which took over, forced a number of its sons and daughters into illegal exile to the USA and Canada. After the 10 Nov., 1989 change and the lifting of travel restrictions, the onset of a national economic catastrophe and delayed implementation of democratic political and economic reforms have led to a ruinous intensification of the emigration process in Bulgaria.
