Summary/Abstract: The article deals with several New Year customs such as Christmas carolling, well-wishing with a decorated cornel twig, stall-cleaning, Ivan-day bathing. Examined are the links and the interdependences which define them as a single complex of folk customs. The author analyses the problems of the age group of the ritual persons. He traces the functions of the constituting parts of the folk customs complex. Shown is also the interdependence between the function of predetermining the economic and family well-being and between the exorcism of evil forces and marital functions. Studied are the social and ritual relations typical of the time of the existence of these customs and the unifying elements in them are demonstrated.
