Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to bring into attention the phenomenon of the international election observation and specifically the election observation missions organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe/Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR). While the activities of international organizations regarding election observation have been rising since the beginning of the 1990s, the attention of Czech political science have not been brought to the subject yet. The first part of this article presents definition of election observation, its principles, aims and critique. The second part focuses on the election observation missions of the OSCE/ODIHR and deals with their types, structure, aims and explains the criticism that these missions have faced. The article argues that there is a space for research in the area of election observation missions and their impact on the situation in the observed countries which have not been covered in the Czech Republic yet.
