Summary/Abstract: Songs containing the motif of the “Poisoning Sister”, widespread on an international scale, have frequently drawn the attention of folklorists. Bearing in mind the results of the studies made so far, the author makes a detailed analysis of songs on this motif among the peoples of South-Eastern Europe. Bulgarian variants, unknown hitherto, are cited, and an attempt is made to establish the initial thematic nucleus of the ballad of the "Poisoning Sister" in South-East European Folklore; the stages through which the ritual song containing this motif passed in to ballads are traced.
