Summary/Abstract: The Greek influence was one of the prevailing subjects for debate in the Romanian society of the second half of the 19th Century, the emphasis being its criticism. On one side, the Greek influence and the Phanariot age were being held responsible for the country's difficulties even 50 years after the Phanariot rule cessation. Moreover, they were being blamed for all the complexes and underachievements of the Romanians. Prominent Historians such as George Sion, George Bariţiu and A.D. Xenopol entered the debate with Greek Historians, their claims based on proof derived from some Western Historians works. Thus they were confident that their texts were beyond any doubt or biased. On the opposite side, the Greek Historians were underlining the importance of the Greek cultural infusion upon the Romanians, the part it played in conveying Western ideas, the useful administration measures undertaken by some Phanariot Princes and all the positive aspects of the Phanariot rule. The present study tries to draw a general idea, identify the main characters, without claiming to exhaust the subject of the period Historical creation, a very rich one in cultural projects. The period that followed did not change dramatically the perception that had been formed throughout the second half of the 19th Century. It nonetheless tried to shift the focus, in order to prepare the ground for more rigorous research that followed in the inter-war period, actively pursued in renowned Schools such as the one formed around Professor Demosthene Russo, less subject to political or public pressures.
