Summary/Abstract: Th is essay is part of a wider investigation that explores the influence of Robert Musil in shaping the novelistic universe of Julio Cortazar’s Hopscotch. One of the greatest lessons the Argentine author dettaches from the musilian thought is a supreme irony, bordering on masochism, since the intelligence used in a perservering and tenacious way is unable to retain a solution found without considering simultaneously the opposite solution.
