What Is Autoethnography Good For? Critical Analysis of Autoethnography as Research Metod

Summary/Abstract: If we want to accept autoethnography as a valid research method, we need to clearly determine what kind of cognitive values it may contribute to the research process. In this article, I examine the way in which autoethnography is defined by its adherents and the functions for its writers and readers. I also present different types of autoethnography taking into account its specific ontological and epistemological foundations. These deliberations are framed in broader context of methodological debates on defining the criteria of scientific knowledge in social sciences and the demarcation problem about how to distinguish between scientific investigation and pseudo-scientific or pseudo-literary activities. I use methodological publications and autoethnographic texts as the data to the analysis.
