Summary/Abstract: The Jewish communities traditionally lacked any attachment to works of art. Care for objects, whether of daily use or related to worship, was regarded as idolatry, and old and worn objects were just replaced with new ones, often of lesser artistic value. This attitude only began to change around the end of the 19th century. In Lvov, the Jewish Art Lovers’ Society was formed in 1910 and the Curator for the Protection of Jewish Art. Monuments was appointed at the Jewish religious community in the town. The activities of the Curator’s Office lead to the opening of the Museum of the Jewish Religious Community in Lvov in 1934.
