AN ANALYSIS OF THE MISUSE OF LEGAL AND ILLEGAL DRUGS AND POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTORY FACTORS TO ABUSE AMONGST LEARNERS IN AZWIFHARWI SECONDARY SCHOOL

Summary/Abstract: Many studies on drug abuse in South Africa have already been conducted. These studies have primarily focused on schools in urban areas. This study was conducted, in what is commonly referred to as a “deep rural area” in the north eastern part of South Africa. The study was under taken at Azwifharwi Secondary School. The school is the only secondary school in the Thikhudini area of Venda. This is an ideal, relatively secluded area to study substance abuse amongst learners in an area that is far removed from city life. Probability sampling has been used to select learners from different grades. A Closed-ended questionnaire was circulated to participants as a data collecting instrument. Findings have been compared with a study done in a rural area of Venda to ascertain whether there are differences in abuse patterns in deep rural and rural areas. Commonly held believes are that drug abuse is less prevalent in deep rural and rural communities that in urban areas.
