Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses linguistic exponents of polemical stances in the debate on the place of catechetical instruction in school. The analysis draws upon journalistic materials and comments from the Internet. The paper also presents forms of reference to previous voices in the debate and ways of introducing one’s own argumentation (consent, apparent consent and objection). Formally, linguistic exponents of polemical stances – those oriented towards the author of the message, its subject and arguments contained in the previous messages, as well as those oriented towards the construal of one’s own text – are realized through expression typical of the style and genre they represent. Stylistically, the exponents are diversified, which relates directly to the medium, the genre of the message and the (political) views of the participants in the debate.
