Aspects of communication between the living and the dead

Summary/Abstract: An individual’s death disorganizes the group, it shakes each community member individually, and it suggests thoughts and considerations about his own future and destiny. Communicating with the dead, the contact with the realm of the dead is a core issue for each culture. It is presented in the ritual behavior of human groups during funeral and death, at commemorative ceremonies and sacrifices for the dead. This communication is not so much information exchange but an attitude. This attitude structures transcendence and project back onto real life. Death is transformed into a long process of leaving and coming back, departures and meetings. The contact with the dead reveals the concept of human abilities to communicate with the supernatural and to influence it, to show consideration for the signs and omens sent from the outer world.
